The federal cabinet has approved new social media rules and registration of global social media platforms in Pakistan within three months has been made mandatory.
All companies, including YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, will be required to register and companies will be required to set up an office in the federal capital within three months. Social media platforms and companies will have to set up data servers within a year . There is also a condition to appoint a liaison officer in Pakistan.
Action will be taken against those who talk about institutions and national security. The National Coordinating Authority will be set up to regulate social media companies, and will be able to close accounts on complaints of targeting national institutions, prohibited content and harassment.
The authority will take action against social media companies for not removing videos and if the companies do not cooperate, their services will be suspended.
